Offered here for sale: Antique A. J. Nellis Self Adjusting, Quick Release Grapple Hook. This device was patented on March 1, 1870 under Patent Number 100330. This was designed to clamp onto a barn rafter or other location by the self tightening claws of this grapple. The hook at its base could hold a hay fork or pulley and the heavier the weight of the item being held, the more the claws of the grapple would dig into the rafter. Since the grapple was self adjusting and required no tools to attach it to the rafter, it could be quickly removed and relocated to another location as needed. This would be a great aid to a farmer and would also be a nice addition to a vintage farm display. Both sides of the grapple are marked as follows - A. J. Nellis & Co. Pittsburg, PA and Patented March 1, 1870. The metal is cast iron. This is a hard to find item and a nice collector piece.
