This is a Delta Milwaukee #1663 cast iron water (quench) cup (CG-31) from a Model 1670 Caroffere Tool Grinder, circa 1943. The OE brass stop cock (SP-2512) and brass tapered pin (CG-13) are included. The blower nozzle (DSS-48) is not. The stop cock needs to be soaked in Kroil or similar penetrant (valve does not turn with the torque I was prepared to apply).


The cast iron shows rust pitting typical of use and age, but has NO cracks or weld repairs. The exterior surface and rim has moderate surface rust and pitting. I’ve wire-brushed the top rim to show what you can expect when cleaned.


I’ve had good success resurfacing the outside of these cups by turning it slowly in a lathe or drill press, spreading a skim coat of JB Weld or other two-part metal epoxy, and filing/sanding when cured. Another finishing method, not quite as successful for me, has been to use a high-build epoxy primer.


The inside surface has heavier rust pitting and scaling, more difficult to remove. I recommend using a wire wheel to remove as much rust and scale as you can.
