Mywife and I have been collecting and selling on since 1997. Ihave been repairing Macs since the early part of 1986, which includeddozens of the 128k Macs. I have sold hundreds of older Apple productsto collectors around the world!

Thislisting is for an OUTSTANDING 1984 Macintosh 128k model M0001 in itsoriginal shipping container, it was manufactured (or final assemblyhappened) during the 5th week of 1984, this Mac is actually having its 35 Anniversary now.

BACKSTORYON THIS MAC

The original owner advertisedthis Mac as being upgraded to 512k and it had suffered a RAM failure, however I had an extra 128k 1984 logicboard, so that was not aproblem for me. I purchased it because it was an early production128k in the original shipping container. Supposedly the Mac was putup in a closet several months after it was repaired (if I remembercorrectly, because of a lightning strike?) in mid-1984 and had lessthan eight months of total use, upon disassembly and inspection Ifound several things that would support that claim.

Logicboard

I assumed that it would haveeither the Apple 512k upgrade board, or a logicboard from a 512k Mac,instead it had the original logicboard which had been upgraded by athird party to the Mac 512k standard with a MUX board, and sixteen256Kx1 DRAM chips, five of DRAM chips had malfunctioned.

I removed the MUX board anddesoldered and replaced all of the 512k DRAM with sixteen matching64Kx1 chips in sockets, returning it to its original 128kconfiguration. If you are wondering why I used sockets, if a DRAMchip dies you simply pop a new one in, these old boards are stillmulti-layered and every-time you solder directly to the board you runthe risk of really screwing it up, lastly you won\'t have to paysomeone $175.00 to work on the board and replace the DRAM. I also rana trace line to take care of display artifacts. The ROM chips, although the same part numbers as the originals(342-0220-A and 0221-A), looked to be from a week 22 1984 Mac basedon the date codes.

Everycomponent on the logicboard dates to 1983 and 1982 except forROM and RAM, in fact, many of them predate components found on myboxed December 1983 Mac logicboard! The RFI shield for the LogicBoard has no de-lamination, which is a very common problem.

Analog-board

TheRFI shield that had originally been at the top of the analogboard(which has a January 1984 date code) had been removed, but that wasstandard operating procedure back then as Apple had sent out repairinstructions that stated the shield should be removed to providebetter convective cooling. The vinyl protective shield is a veryearly gray Rev-C one.

Ifyou\'ve ever noticed, solder joints on most of the old analog-boardstend to develop a dull shine, and you\'ll see slight browning aroundthe Flyback,I did an extensive check on all the analogboard solder joints, andthey look like new! The Flyback on this board looks great, with noneof the white residue that starts to develop over time from widetemperature fluctuations and constantly being turned on and off!

Internal400k Drive and Chassis

TheJanuary 400k internal drive was completely disassembled, had the diskcarriage cleaned and re-lubricated, had the read/write head cleaned, and had the circuit board cleaned with 91% alcohol. The drive sled isan early Rev-B as is the Logic/Analog-board chassis.

Thereare areas on the cases that have faint surface scratches, and smallnicks. The worst of of any visible damage can be seen in the ninephotos below. I\'m not saying there aren\'t more, I\'m saying that\'s allI can find. It appears that whoever repaired it in 1984, used one ofthose Mac cracker tools, which even if used correctly, will leavesome type of mark, the only tool needed by an experienced technicianto disassemble the Mac is a T-15 driver. After viewing the photosbelow, please look at the opening profile photos again and you\'ll seethe discrepancies on the cases are hardly noticeable, if at all formost of them?

CRTand Internal Cases

Itappears that the CRT was also replaced when the Mac was repaired, asit has a date code from week 18 of 1984, but it is still the same CRTas the original, and it is in beautiful condition with no burn-in.That is one of the things that supports the original owner\'s claimthat it was only used for a total of about eight months. Almostevery compact Mac CRT still around has at least some screen burn, butnot this one!

Cosmeticallythe unit cases are in phenomenal condition, beautiful color! What really got me about the cases was how early they are. Even inJanuary 1984 (and some Dec 1983s) you saw cases shipping with Rev-Dfaceplates and rear cases, the ones on this Mac are both Rev-Cs. Asan interesting side note, the early Macs had domed T-15 screws andall of the internal securing screws were anodized black, what made mefind a bit of a surprise to find that on this one, is when Macs wererepaired in the mid 1980s, most technicians just indiscriminatelygrabbed what ever screws were sitting on the bench, that\'s why youtypically find mixtures of the older and latter type screws. Andyes, the rear case has all the molded signatures of the originalMacintosh design team, just as all Macs made in 1983/84/85 do.

FloppyEMU

TheFloppy EMU is the bestthing to happen to the 128k and 512k Macs since, well, anything!!!(Google it to find the store: BMOW). This floppy disk Emulator isthe cat\'s meow! Transfer disk images you\'ve downloaded from the webonto the SD card, then Plug the SD card into the emulator, and inless than 30 seconds you are running that file on your 128k!!!! .I\'ve mounted it securely in a 1984 M0130 400k external drive casewith the original cable, it is a very secure installation. Color wiseit is slightly yellowed, but still a good match for the Mac. Here isa list of images on the microSD card-

System1.0 (Version .97 14 January 1984) NOTE:There is somecontroversy in the community as to whether or not this System 1.0 isin fact the original pre-release, with items added from latter Systemreleases? The Sysversion application is from 1986? I installed thisversion on the Floppy Emulator because I thought it looked prettynifty with the scripted font that looks like the pre official Macrelease photos. It does sometimes freeze the Mac when using it andthe Internal 400k drive at the same time.

Iam an avid collector, however Irecognize that the 400k disk based media that came with these 1984machines is a bottleneck, they die quickly! Running old 400k disk inyour internal drive for an extended period, will render it useless,FAST! Let\'s face it, it\'s a disk with a 34 year old plastic sheetwith a magnetic film containing your data. It was fine in its day,but it was not meant to last 34 years.

However, it is more likehaving that 1966 Hertz Shelby Mustang GT350. You don\'t want to putmore miles on the 289 or transmission, but you still want themworking! The beauty of the Floppy EMU is …..... what if you coulddrive your 1966 GT350 with a modern engine at the flick of a switchwithout modifying the Shelby and keep the original miles on the drivetrain:)

The upper and lower externaldrive cases are not bolted together. Simply slide the top case off, select your disk, and slide the top case back on to give it theappearance of being a normal M0130 external drive.

I replaced the feet withmodern vinyl stops. Color wise the cases are a great match for theMac. Please see the photos below.

Keyboardand Mouse

TheWeek 3 keyboard has had thecircuitboard and keys individually cleaned, no grime or dirt residueon the keys, no dander, no hair, no spilled drinks, it does have somesmall scratches and nicks, but looks OUTstanding, please see thephotos below.

NOTE-This is not the original keyboard that shipped with this Mac.When I received the Mac it had a week 9 keyboard, once again, thisprobably happened when the Mac was sent in for repair, the originalkeyboard may have sustained damage, also many technicians didn\'t keeptrack of serial numbers, after all a M0110 keyboard was the same asany other M0110 keyboard.

Anykeyboard from 1984 with a week range of between week 3 to week 7would be correct for this Mac, and this one is early, it has norevision cases! The cardboard sleeve for the shipping box wasstarting to tear, so it was reinforced with clear tape, but is stillin great condition.

TheWeek 4 Mouse is in beautifulcondition! It has early revision cases and unlike most mice from thisperiod, the standoffs look NEW, indicating it saw little use. Theplastic that was on the cardboard sleeve was never fully removed.

Boththe mouse and keyboard are a fantastic match to the Mac color wise. Please see the photos below for details.

Accessoriesand Container

TheAccessories Container ,is in great shape. It does have surfaces scratches that extend into the dyed logoareas, and is yellowed around the edges. It has been washed by hand(machine washing would take the logo off, I learned that the hard waymany years ago) and is in excellent condition as compared to themajority still out there. Please see the photos below.

Iupdated the Systemfloppy Disk tofinder 4.1 as the original folder on the disk was corrupted. TheMacintosh Tour floppy diskis unaltered and as the January 1984 Finder (1.0). Both disks willboot the Mac, however as with any floppy disk that is almost 35 yearsold, I can\'t guarantee how long they will hold up? These are the samedisks that shipped with Macs in late Dec 1983 and early 1984.

Thevery early (no revision) User\'s Guidehas slight marks onthe front and rear covers and slight handling wear with a small tearon the front cover. It is in great condition with no missing pages, and no writing in it.

Theunmarked Packing Listis in pristine condition!

Includedis the programers switch, a tested Macintosh Tourcassette (the correct early revision), and the correct90 degree angled Apple power cord with cardboard sleeve .

TheMacPaint and MacWrite Guidesare in excellent condition, with some handling marks and asmall amount of brown age spotting.

The MacPaint and MacWriteFloppy disks have been tested, however as with the other floppydisks in this listing, I can\'t guarantee how long they will function, they are almost 35 years old.

The MacWrite/MacPaintshipping container does have shelf wear, but as compared to theother ones that still exist, it is in excellent condition, andcertainly display worthy, please see the photos below.

OriginalShipping Container

Theoriginal shipping containerwith foam inserts isin OUTSTANDING condition. One hand hold is torn, and there are somesmall gashes, any other areas of damage can be seen in the photosbelow. Even with the damage this container is in the top 1% of any128k containers that still exist, it is completely display worthy!

Whenviewing the photos you may notice that the date code on the box isMarch 1984 when the Mac serial number is from February. Theexplanation is simple, the Macintosh was a sales disappointment.Apple had expected to sell 50,000 units a month, total amount ofunits sold didn\'t reach that number until April of 1984! Appleinitially had a glut of Macintosh units sitting in the factories forthe first several months of 1984. That is why you will find Week 15Macs shipping as late as June 1984.

Alsoyou may notice there is a placard attached to one of the top boxflaps. I did that for two reasons, one to hide the original ownersname and address, and two, because I intended for this Mac to be partof a private Apple Museum that I was going to open, but that I havenow given up on. In any case, the box with the placard looksfantastic! Please see the photos below.

Lastlyfolks, there is no such thing as extended testing with software, orhardware diagnostics, to guarantee you will receive a Mac that willfunction for years, months, or even minutes. There is no such thingas a “Burn-in” test for a 35 year old computer!

If you run these machines formany hours, especially the Mac 128ks / 512ks / and Mac Plus, sincethey have no fans, they get EXTREMELY HOT, and what you get in returnfor a supposed extended test, are machines that are not guaranteed tolast that much longer, but in fact, guaranteed to fail that muchsooner. They are old all die sooner or latter.

Thatbeing said, I believe that this 128k will hold up better than anybeing offered right now. I went through everything on the analog andlogic boards!

Withthe Floppy EMU, this would be a great functioning centerpiece inany“Tech Firm”lobby, I have sold many that already are, and myMacs are in several Museums around the would!

I believe that this little1984 Macintosh would make a great addition to any Apple collection, and is rock solid when compared to anything out there!
