US Navy Mark V Diving Helmet 1943 DESCO!

Up for sale with is a fantastic 100% authentic US Navy Mark V diving helmet! This helmet was made by Diving Equipment & Salvage Company (DESCO) on June 16th, 1943.

This helmet was just found last week in a basement in Texas. The house was going to be demolished and before work started, this helmet was found hidden in the corner - how cool!

To our surprise the helmet is 100% serial numbers matching with a very interesting patina that can only be formed after real use and many years of sitting around. Helmets like this on display in the home or office are a attention getter and will impress just about anyone!

Nations Attic is a full time business in antique slot machines and vintage diving helmets. Take your time viewing all of the photos and information below. If you have any questions please feel free to email or call - [phone removed by ]. Our web site is at oldhelmet.com

The set of photos directly above show all the different sides of this Mark V. This helmet is complete with all its wing nuts and brails. There are really no large dents to the bonnet or breastplate. The dumbbell lock on the back turns without a problem, the old chain with cotter pin are gone.

We were able to separate the bonnet from the breastplate without a problem. The old gasket is dried out but it is present. The two parts do go back together without a problem as well.

All of the glass is intact and in very good condition, no cracks or breaks. The helmet does have the original non-return valve still attached.

When looking at this helmet from various angles, it\'s almost like it\'s dripping with age and patina! Lots of Mark V\'s are polished out, but ones with this sort of look just illicit ones imagination of where it must have been during the war!

Shown above is a close-up of the DESCO ID tag. It is serial number 411 with a date of manufacture of 6-16-43. The tag is somewhat hard to read but the serial number and date stampings are clear. DESCO didn\'t start producing the Mark V for the government until mid 1942, so this one is a fairly early example.

A very important detail for any Mark V is if the serial number on the ID plate, bonnet and breastplate are matching. In this case, they all are! Shown above is a close-up of the serial # 411 on the inside of the neck ring on both the bonnet and breastplate.

The next photo above shows the inside of the helmet. All of the original vents are present and in excellent condition. The external and internal moving parts of the helmet are not moving right now simply due to an extended time of non-use and age. This helmet is being sold as a collectible antique and not something to be used unless checked by a certified dive shop.

For a helmet that was rescued from a house that was about to be demolished, this helmet really is a great condition! After going over it carefully we did note a few imperfections that are worth mentioning. The large wing nut on the front to open the front window has one ear broken off. The top of the bolt on this hinge is also gone. These wing nuts and bolt can easily be obtained from DESCO or Morse. Also, the air valve on the back is dented in just a little - hardly noticeable.

The last couple photos shows some additional details of the helmet. The original handle valve on the front is in great condition with markings clear. The non-return valve on the back also has the US Navy inspection stamp on it, which is always a plus!

With this helmet you can be assured it is 100% authentic and not a reproduction. With every vintage diving helmet we sell we send along a certified certificate of authenticity. This document has two images of the helmet, serial number and date noted on it. We also send along our unique card with this helmets serial number stamped on it, to keep with the helmet.

If you are looking for a unique Mark V with a patina that can\'t be duplicated, this one is it. It looks like it just came up from ocean in 1943 and then it was put away after the war!
