The Columbian Exposition of1893 was a World’s Fair held in Chicago Illinois. Its theme wasthe celebration of the 400-year anniversary of Christopher Columbus’s arrivalin the New World. The Fair asdesigned by Daniel Burnham and Frederick Law Olmsted in the Beaus Arts styleand neoclassical architecture. TheExposition site covered 600 acres. 46countries had pavilions and there were over 200 building constructed for the Fair. It opened May 1, 1893 and closed October 30, 1893, with an attendance of 27 million people. Two buildings survived: the World’s CongressAuxiliary building became the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Palace of Fine Arts went on to house the Field’s Columbian Museum whichhas since been relocated as the Field Museum of Natural History. One long lasting development that came fromthe Columbian Exposition was the use of alternating current to deliverelectricity. Thomas Edison and GeneralElectric (GE) proposed to illuminate the Fair using direct current. Westinghouse proposed the use of alternatingcurrent. Westinghouse’s alternatingcurrent was selected, mainly due to the lower cost. Westinghouse presented may exhibits relatingto electricity to the 27 million Fair visitors. Many attribute the Fair as the pivotal moment when the future ofelectricity was decided in favor of alternating current.
