During this last week of September, we will be saleing a private collection of Indian and Wild West memorabilia. Thecollection includes many "Buffalo Bill Wild West" items such as props, souvenirs, and presentation pieces. The collection also includes many Native American related items such as tomahawks, knives, beaded items, and trade silver pieces. These items have never been offered at sale before.This sale is for an original 1895 Buffalo Bill's Wild West presentation tomahawk pipe. The haft measures 22" long. It is decorated with 32 original brass tacks and file branded. The axe head measures 9.5" from the edge to the tip of the bowl. The head is tight with no movement. The head is etched with "BBWW 1895".
1895 was the first year thatCody and his associates decided toexpand their reach by playing smaller communities, moving the show almost dailyfrom town to town. In that year, there were 131 presentations in 190 days. Up until then, they would play several days or weeks in larger cities. During 1895, the Show visited the following states: Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Illinois, Massachusetts, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, and Washington D.C. Also, in 1895 Buffalo Bill (W.F. Cody) was instrumental in the founding of the town of Cody, Wyoming.
This tomahawk would have been sold as a souvenir or used by one of the Native American cast members during the show. It is also possible, and was customary, for town officials to present Buffalo Bill (W.F. Cody) with a gift as the show stopped in each city.
Everything on this tomahawk isoriginal and in excellent condition. It has not been repaired or cleaned.
