Sparton \"Sled\" Art Deco Cobalt Blue Etched Mirror Glass AM Tube Radio Model 557


Up for sale is an Art Deco 1936/37 Cobalt Blue Etched Mirror Glass Sparton \"Sled\" AM tube radio model 557. As you can see in the pictures, the Sparton is in good cosmetic condition except for the usual scratches, nicks and minor finish loss from use and age. There are no cracks in the glass. There is some nicks or scratches on the black wood. The blue appears to have some etching or spiderwebbing from the inside due to age. On the front display there appears to be some loss of the silver in the small square. The top panel is plain blue mirror without the etched design. The Sparton radio set was designed by world famous industrial designer Walter Teague. This rare 3-knob version is etched in cobalt blue with a sleek sled design and wrap around chrome fins, see pictures. The Chrome fins are also in excellent cosmetic condition except for the usual scratches and pitting from use/age. The AM band works and, external antenna is required (not included). The inside light does work as shown in one of the pictures. The tube radio is about 8 3/4\" tall, 7 3/4\" deep and 17 1/4\" wide.


When I acquired this radio I took it to a music store to see if it needed any work done. Their repairman looked it over, plugged the unit in and hooked it up to an external antennae. He did get it to play stations, and recommended that we not do any work to it. So as far as I know it is in good working condition.


Please keep in mind that this radio is rare and collectible radios are not meant to be for daily use. This is an excellent tube radio that looks like it has been well cared for. Please super-size the photos and feel free to ask questions.
