I believe that every individualsoldier, sailor and airman involved in Operation Overlord – the Battle ofNormandy – was given a copy of this \"personal letter\" from Eisenhower,who was Commander of SHAEF (SupremeHeadquarters, Allied Expeditionary Force). Operation Overlord began on June 6th1945 with the Normandy Landings, or D-Day Landings, and would eventually leadto the Allied victory in Europe.

This example of the letter was among a small collection of papers from theSecond World War belonging to an RAF Leading Aircraftman who – as far as I canwork out– was serving at RAF Tarrant Rushton in Dorset at the time of theD-Day Landings. RAF Tarrant Rushton was the RAF base from which the openingattack of the Battle of Normandy, the glider-borne attack on Pegasus Bridge atCaen, was launched.

This example of the letter is in decent condition. It has been twohorizontal folds, which I think these letters always have, and has also beenfolded vertically down the centre at some time. It has some gentle creasing anda few very faint foxing spots. It has no tears or other physical damage. Thefolds are not fragile. I hope the hi-res scans give you a clear idea of thecondition but if you have any questions, please do message me.

The letter measures 9 inches by 6 inches (23 x 15 cms approx).
