WWII AAF Airman\'s \"Escape\" Chart/Map, Silk - Japan & South China Seas - Signed:
$200.00

This is a vintage, original, never-issued WWII Army Air Force silk Airman\'s 2-sided color \"escape\" chart/map which was made in May, 1945. The war in the Pacific still had months to go before Japan surrendered unconditionally. It is two sided and measures 30 inches high by 34 inches wide. Side 1 is titled: \"Japan & South China Seas No. C-52\" & side 2 is titled: \"East China Sea C-53\". The chart was produced by the \"Army Map Service U.S. Army Washington D.C., For use by War and Navy Department Agencies Only, Advance Edition\". At the time this chart was produced our understanding of the jet stream was rudimentary. High altitude wind currents are shown though not in as much detail as a modern chart/map. Our B-29 pilots and crews learned that there were some very strong air currents aloft when their aircraft\'s times to targets took much longer than anticipated and the return trips went faster. This chart/map reflects the limited knowledge of the time but was a tremendous help to the pilots and crews nonetheless. For decades my wife and I have worked at gun/knife/militaria shows and over the years, at these shows, I have personally met with each of the veterans who have signed this chart and paid them to sign it. This silk map/chart has been signed by the following WWII air crew veterans:

Ira Weatherly - Pilot - \"Straight Flush\" flew six combat missions in which \"pumpkin bombs\" (five-ton TNT bombs with the same handling characteristics as the nuclear weapons) were dropped on Japanese industrial targets. The crew bombed Tokyo (20 July), Otsu (24 July), Kanose (26 July), and Maizuru (29 July) in Straight Flush & participated in the atomic bomb attack on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945.

C.D. Albury - Co-pilot - \"Bockscar\" dropped a Fat Man nuclear weapon over the Japanese city of Nagasaki August 9, 1945.

Russell E. Gackenbach - Navigator - \"Bockscar.\"

\"Dutch\" Van Kirk - navigator on the B-29 \"Enola Gay\" that dropped the atom bomb \"Little Boy\" on Hiroshima August 6, 1945.

R.E. Cole - Jimmy Doolittle\'s co-pilot on the famous \"30 Seconds over Tokyo\" bombing raid April 18, 1942.

Mitsuhau \"Bill\" Nagase - Imperial Japanese Army pilot, drafted into Kamikazi force at end of war but didn\'t fly a suicide mission before the war ended.

This highly detailed, historic, collectible autographed chart is unissued & in excellent mint condition. The signatures are 100% authentic. I personally presented this chart/map to these six veterans for them to sign.
