Exciting discovery! Very early, Civil War OTS E-flat tenor Saxhorn by E. G. Wright,Boston with four Valves!

First of all, I\'m no expert on OTS (Over The Shoulder) horns by any stretch of theimagination. However, some characteristics are obvious; this horn isundoubtedly an early saxhorn (not before 1841, as Wright moved fromRoxbury MA to Boston in 1841).

  • The entire construction is more crude than it can be found on later horns(1862 - 1865). The forth valve seems to be an indication that it is anearly horn as later horns by E. G. Wright were only equipped with threevalves as that was really all that was needed for a chromatic horn.
  • The tubing to change pitch the most (longest tubing) protrudes the leadpipe, hence exposing it to be easily damaged. Known saxhorns by Wright andother makers would curve tubing to 90 degree angles avoiding the tubing toprotrude and prevent damage.
  • The brass is of heavy gauge, heavier than other saxhorns I washolding in my hands. This horn weighs 2.5 lbs.
This saxhorn is signed \"E G Wright Maker Boston,\" see pictures #10, 11,12, and 40. Boston was the main center for instrument making during thecivil war, followed by New York and Philadelphia.
E. G. Wright (1811 - 1971), was the most famous instrument maker inBoston.

The overall length of this saxhorn is 27-1/4 inches and thebell diameter is 7-7/8 inches.

CONDITION:This horn is in the same condition as I found it. The previous owner foundit in an attic in a house in Concord, New Hampshire 43 years ago. Otherthan two or three small pieces on one of the rotary valves, the ring topull the longest slide or tubing to change pitch (the slide or tubingwhich protrudes the instrument,) and the mouth piece, the instrument seemsto be complete.
The condition is about as expected on a saxhorn which saw battle. Thereare no holes or breaks as far as I can see and there is really no corrosion, just patina! This horn could be restoredto its former glory in the hands of the right expert skilled in theart of restoring brass instruments. As far as I can see this horn has nomajor issues and the condition is actually good considering its age. I also have not noticed any repairs. I have not cleaned it or tried to take it apart. All screw-slots and knurlededges are unmolested and look perfect. I took many pictures to show allthe angles of this exceedingly rare and early saxhorn crafted by famous E.G. Wright out of Boston. This could be the only Elbridge G. Wright saxhornwith four valves known to exist!HISTORY:Bugles were very confined in terms of pitch and range and play-ability wasimproved in the early 19th century by adding valves to the bugle which opened holes. More and more valves were added, up to 12 valves, to manipulate thepitch of the instrument.
Adolphe (Antoine Joseph) Sax, a French instrument maker (1814 - 1894),experimented by adding tubing to his instruments rather than open holeswith keys, hence, he thereby invented the chromatic valved brassinstrument.
He patented his new instrument in 1845 and the instrument became to beknown as \"Sax Horn.\" \"The valved saxhorn was superior to the keyed bugle because of itsevenness of timber, accurate intonation throughout the larger range, andease of playability.\" (Newsom, 1979.) \"The development of the saxhornfamily would all but eliminate the use of keyed bugles and ophicleides inthe civil war.\" (Lewis 3rd, 2015.) \"The saxhorn had much to offer: moreconsistent tone quality in all registers, better intonation, greatertechnical facility, and the ability to create a warm. mellow soundespecially pleasing to the listener.\" (Stephen L. Rhodes 2007.)
Throughout the civil war the bands performed for the solders and elevatedtheir spirits with their play. First unarmed, they later were forced to befighting solders too as money was tight.
