RFC. Two Log Books. Pilot & Observer. 4 Squadron. Royal Flying Corps RNAS:
$634.11

*****

I have for sale two Royal Flying Corps Log Books.

One was issued to a pilot, the second to an Observer.

Both flew operationally together for a time on RE8s.

The pilot survived WW1, but the Observer was killed in action.

Details of the two Log Books relating to Lt Hockney (Pilot) and Lt Shillingford (Observer)are as follows:-

Lt Hockney: He was a pilot with 4 Squadron on RE8s. He flew combat missions over the Western Front. His missions included \'shoots\' (Artillery Spotting). He had a number of encounters with German aircraft. On one occasion he was brought down by ground fire.

The only type of front line aircraft flown by him was the RE8. The Log Book does not itemise his training aircraft flown.

The Log Book comprises 34 pages in relation to WW1 flying and a similar number of pages in relation to immediate post-war flying.

The Log Book is dated between April 30th 1918 and the Armistice November 11th 1918. There are a number of post war flight entries in aircraft such as the Bristol Fighter and DH9.

(One of his Observers was Lt Shillingford, of whom he thought highly. Lt Shillingford was killed in action whilst flying with another pilot. Lt Hockney makes a poignant reference to Lt Shillingford in his Log Book.Lt Shillingford\'sLog Book is included in this sale).

************

Lt Shillingford: He was an Observer with 4 Squadron and flew often with Lt Hockney as mentioned above. The Log Book is dated between 11th March 1918 and 14th June 1918.

His Log Book details his training flights in England. He details his operational missions over the Western Front, which included many \'shoots\' and two combats with German aircraft.

The Log Book does not itemise his training aircraft flown. All entries relate to the RE8.

He was killed when his aircraft was destroyed by Anti-Aircraft fire.

The Log Book comprises eight pages. Subsequent entries such as a \'4 Squadron Roll of Honour\' at the end of the Log Book and other comments have been made by another person, possibly Lt Hockney?
