1931 ATWATER KENT MODEL 82 CATHEDRAL RADIO REPAIRED RESTORED WORKS:
$510.00

For yourconsideration is this gorgeous 1931 Atwater Kent Gothic Cathedral Tube Radio, Model 82. It is an ac-powered 7 tube Superhet receiving the standard broadcast band. The radio doesn\'t have an internal antenna so an outside long wire (75\' to 100\' ;15 to 20 feet high) is suggested to get the best reception from this radio. After repairing the radio, I was pleased to hear many AM stations with just the attached 20 foot length of wire stretched out in my shop. The audio is pleasant...loud and clear with only residual hum.
This radio when purchased had a smashed grill and the grill cloth was badly torn. Fortunately the speaker cone was not damaged.
This gorgeous walnut veneer cathedral cabinet was then carefully stripped and the damaged portion of the wood grill was repaired. It was then refinished bringing out that wonderful grain on the front, and on the burlwood veneer framing the dial and knobs and on the exotic tiger wood veneer crowning the top of the arch.
The design of this beautiful Model 82 cabinet was done by Charles S. Bradley of Philadelphia and also designed cabinets for a few other model.
The original speaker cloth was badly torn, so, a n.o.s. period cloth was used and looks nice. The speaker itself is in perfect condition..no tears or holes. The knobs are the original and are correct for this model. They were cleaned and polished and are perfect. The celluloid dial doesn\'t have any cracks and some marking on the lower end of the dial are not as dark as the rest. The large Atwater Kent antiqued brass dial escutcheon was cleaned and polished and is in great condition. One of the old original metal tube filter capacitors was disconnected, the other had been removed and replaced with a tubular paper type in the past. New electrolytics were jumpered in. All of the dog bone resistors were replaced and all of the oil filled capacitor tubs remain, but are out of the circuit and replaced with new orange drop capacitors--with the exception of the tone control. It remains and functions properly. All of the cracked rubber covered wires were either replaced or sleeved with tubing.
All tubes were tested on a calibrated TV-7 and all test good. All moving parts were lubricated and all switch contacts were chemically cleaned. The cloth power cord is the original and in good condition, and a period plug was installed and then finally, the radio was accurately aligned with a I.F. of 130 Khz.
This cathedral model 82 has three knobs. The larger knob is station tuning. The celluloid dial is firmly mounted to the chassis and the station needle rotates through an arc and points to the station frequecy when the dial knob is turned. A n.o.s. 2.6 volt bulb shines light through celluloid station dial. The lower left knob is a three position tone control and works fine. The lower right knob is the on/off volume switch.
Overall, I was very happy with the final results. When the chassis was removed, I realized that this radio needed a lot of work. Many wires had to be replaced and most of the dog bone resistors were way out of tolerance so it was decided to replace them all. Using two perf boards, a terminal board was made to ease the resistor replacement. A few of the flex resistors also had to be replaced. The flex resistors look like an ordinary wire so care has to be taken not to replace a flex resistor with just a wire. Then there was a problem getting the control tube to work properly. Plate and grid resistors had to be re-configured using new values.
The cabinet was another problem, not only did the wood speaker grill have to be repaired but a lot of the cabinet veneer was loose. There is still a small missing piece on the burlwood portion lower left corner. But once finished and with the chassis inside the overall appearance looks gorgeous.
As a personal note, the Atwater Kent Model 82 has always been my favorite cathedral radio. The dimensions of this beautiful Atwater Kent is 16\" wide,19\" tall and 10\"deep.
If you are looking for a great looking Cathedral as well as one upgraded, then don\'t pass this one by. You won\'t be disappointed.
