ANTIQUE CAMERA (1897) HOBBIES BAUSCH & LOMB UNICUM SHUTTER + 4 PLATES & CASE VGC:
$335.42

Iam not an expert but I believe this camera is not only rare but inexceptional condition. It comes in the original, fitted, leathercase, which has a perfect working catch and no weak or missingstitching or damage to the leather. There are two compartments inthe case, one for the camera and one which holds the four originalmahogany photographic plates.

Thecamera body is covered in black leather which is in very goodcondition. The carrying handle is perfect. A push button allows thefront of the case to drop and expose the camera. There is a waistlevel viewfinder which flips in when closed and a “double bubble”spirit level mounted on the mahogany platform. The lens/bellows slidesmoothly to the front of the platform and lock in place with leverjust below the name ,plate marked “Hobbies”. The metal parts areall shiny with no sign of wear or other damage allowing very smoothaction for all the links, levers etc. .

Thebellows are perfect as are the mahogany lens mount and lens fittings. The actual glass lens shows no sign of wear or damage and shutterrelease works, cocking and firing smoothly.

Thename “UNICUM” is clear and in tiny writing on the brass, immediately below the lens and above “UNICUM”, is incised “BAUSCH& LOMB. OPT.CO. JAN 6 1887” (seephoto 9)

Thefour mahogany plates are in excellent condition with no splits orother damage. Each one has “PAT. JULY 29 1890” stampedinto the wood.

Thereis plenty of information on the Internet about Bausch & Lomblenses, shutters etc, including the following, which may be helpful:

“Bausch& Lombintroduced its Unicumtwo-blade shutter in 1897. On top it had a speed dial with speedscale from ½ to 1/100 sec. or 1 to 1/100 sec. plus B and T mode. Ithad two pistons, one to connect the tube redof the release bulb, the other as part of the speed settingmechanics. For aperture setting it had a built-in irisdiaphragm, Itwas one of the best shutters of its time.”

Thisis an opportunity to acquire a rare, late Victorian camera with anexcellent quality mechanism in very good condition. Please note: There is no \"Buy it Now\" available on this listing.
