DESCRIPTION: This is a felt swallowtail pennant for theIvy League school Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. This consists of an Old Eli blue felt withlarge cream letters spelling the Bulldogs school name, ‘YALE’. It measures 28” along its top & bottomedges, and 10” wide at its left side.There is no maker’s label on the back. Felt-lettered pennants areusually from before 1930, because once lamination was made cost-efficient around1920, the labor and machinery to cut and stitch on letters became tooexpensive. IN this case, however, I dateit much earlier, partly due to the swallowtail, which was a preferred rightedge early on, but mostly to the fact that the left edge, which on mostpennants would have tassels sewn on, in this case has one single band of feltwoven through slits in the blue felt, to create a tassel at top and atbottom. This was more common early on,and found to be not altogether efficient for hanging – it works well if youhave a wooden rod to tie it to, to say ‘Rah! Rah!’ as you wave the pennant at agame. I also date it earlier due to thelettering being so oversized in comparison to the field background - by1905-1910 it became a kind of standard to leave a good amount of space aroundthe letters. But I LOVE the eccentricshapes of these letters made to fill out the space given to them.

CONDITION: The photo was taken with a window to theright, so this pennant does NOT darken overall to the left. This is in NEAR-MINT ‘used’ condition. There are no fade marks nor darkening, andthere are no pinholes or moth holes. Theband of tassel is in excellent shape. Though the cream felt appears darker, Ilike to think of this as patina. See, Ioften wash felt-lettered pennants carefully to remove smoke (and I find itprevents moths from being interested in them again) - this was washed gently inWoolite, and the colors are consistent throughout. By the way, I am a BEAR about detaileddescription, so this is a LOT better than my nitpicking description makes itsound. The pennant comes from anon-smoking and pet-free home.
