I\'m listing another eclectic assortment of antiques and collectibles, and I suspect there will be something to interest just about everyone.Here\'s the first version of J. Lancaster\'s Le Merveilleux quarter plate camera. The camera dates to the early 1880\'s and differs from later versions, which were taller than they were wide and featured a folding bed. The camera is compact and beautifully built, but the bed on this example has been changed. The original bed, to which the front and rear standards were attached on a rail, has been been replaced with a bed to which both standards are permanently mounted, in a fixed position, allowing the camera to focus at approximately 5-6 feet, but no further, and no closer. I\'m guessing this was done because the original bed was damaged, but I didn\'t undertake the modification myself, so I really couldn\'t say for sure.The ground glass back is in excellent condition, and the focusing plate flips up, as designed, allowing you to mount a plateholder on the back. A nice plateholder is included with the camera; it slides easily into the rear rail and fits snugly against the back of the camera. The lens is clear and it throws a nice image against the ground glass. The Lancaster tag on the face of the camera is original and in excellent condition. There are a few tiny holes in the sides of the standards associated with the original hardware that secured the standards to the bed, but the bellows appear to be light tight, and overall the camera is in nice shape. It displays beautifully, as you can see.Shipping weight will be about 4 lb.That\'s about it.
