1890s Rare Etched Shot Glass - Peter Stumpf Anheuser Busch Brewing Richmond, VA:
$248.50

Rare, early shot glass - Etched - \"Stumpf\" that dates to the 1890s. This piece is likely from Saloon owned by Peter Stumpf & Co from 1897-1902 on East Broad Street. Peter Stumpf was first Anheuser Busch franchisee east of the Mississippi in Richmond, Va and bottled beer in the 1870s-90s at 1817 E. Main Street, company later became the Home Brewing Company. I have only seen a few of these shot glasses over the years. This one is in good condition with no chips or cracks, the gold rim is faded in places, the lettering is very good. This is a very nice go with for southern/Virginia beer collectors as Stumpf is well known name in early Richmond brewing. Please email with any questions and good luck.More from internet and \"Richmond Beers\" history by Morris, on Peter Stumpf (1851-1903): \"He came to the U.S. when he was 18 years old.
Peter was born in the city of Offenbach Germany, May 10th, 1851. After moving to Richmond, he was for many years proprietor and operator of the Home Brewery, Stumpf was apparently a better manager than his predecessors as his brewery, Peter Stumpf & Co. became a success. The brewery had franchises in Petersburg, Newport News, and Phoebus, Virginia as well as Raleigh, North Carolina. They also owned numerous saloons in Richmond, which was normal for breweries of the period. So called \"tied\" bars sold only their parent companys products.
Other than those constructed by the railroad, the largest industrial buildings were part of the circa 1891 complex of the Peter Stumpf Brewing Company, which also owned and operated the Home Brewery located in the Carver Residential Historic District. The offices of the Peter Stumpf Brewing Company were at 1125 West Clay Street in a Second Empire-inspired brick building with a false mansard roof, twin projecting bays, and rough-hewn stone windowsills and lintels. The decorative brickwork on this building is typical of that found throughout the district.
In 1897 Stumpf retired leaving his successors with a successful company.
Renamed the Home Brewing Company, it had a brewing capacity of between 25,000 to 30,000 barrels a year. However, even though the brewery bearing his name was changed to the Home Brewing Company, the new owners left the initials \"PS\" on the barrel on their logo to honor Stumpf. The only competing brewery (Richmond Brewery) produced only 12,000 to 14,000 barrels a year.
The Home Brewery continued their earlier success in the early 20th century appealing to local pride. In 1903 George Bernier became brewmaster. Bernier would remain with the company through Prohibition and repeal.\"
