WW2 Navy Killed In Action Certificate and Pilot Log Books Grouping :
$274.00

Thissale is for a nice World War Two US Navy pilot’s killed in action papergrouping. The grouping consists of this man’s two filled out Navy issued logbooks, the Personal Effects letter which his widow received with one of his logbooks when it was sent home to her after his loss, and then his President HarryTruman autopen signed Killed in Action Memorial Accolade certificate ordocument, in its original mailing tube, as was sent to his widow also. Thepilot was LT Julius Joseph Boyd. LT Julius Boyd was a long serving pilot inWW2, he was from Blue Earth, Minnesota in Faribault County. The first log bookwas all from his stateside time. It is a standard US Navy issued log book and iswell used and well worn. It is of course named to LT Boyd. It was started inJanuary 1941 with his flights in an N3N3. He later moved in to So-1, SO-2, andSO-3 aircraft after that, then the SNJ-1, the OS2U-2, SOC-1, N3N, and NS-1. Hefinished out the first log book in December 1942. It appears he mist havequalified himself, then was an instructor pilot. I suspect that he mailed orleft this log book at home with his wife when he shipped overseas, as theeffects letter she got only noted one log book being mailed home to her in BlueEarth. His 1942 and much of his 1943 flights appeared to have been in the SNB-2aircraft; all to date was in Pensecola. It appears that in August 1943 hetransitioned into the Lockheed PV-1 Ventura aircraft, while with BombingSquadron 149 / VB-149. He flew with them all over the east coast on trainingand sub search and patrol missions. The log shows that in November 1944 he flewto the west coast and then to Hawaii. In March 1945 his log shows flights inthe area of the Philippines. He had 12 flights he completed, it looks as if hewas killed on his 13th mission. His missions prior to his loss wereto Tacloban and Samar. Some internet research revealed that while flying out ofTacloban with VB-149, on March 13th, 1945 he and his crew were lostwhile on a search mission to Borneo. No one ever learned what the exact causeof their loss was, it was thought to possibly be weather, no trace was everfound of any of them. Anyway, those are the log books. The certificate is thestandard WW2 Presidential Accolade. This one is somewhat unique in that it is aTruman signed document; most were Roosevelt. It notes his unit as VB-149, wherehe was killed, and the date. Its been rolled for three quarters of a centurynearly, but it and the tube it was mailed in are in nice condition overall butobviously are old and used, as are all the items in this group. His co-pilot’snamed Purple Heart is known to be in collector hands, I have no idea where Boyd’sis, nor have I ever had or seen about it, and it is NOT included with thisgroup. If his co-pilot got that award, no doubt Boyd did too. I have taken a bunch of pictures of it all, please contact me with any questions the pictures do not answer.
