Zenith Tube Radio - once a barn find...:
$416.00

Note: SHIPPING HAS BEEN OVER-ESTIMATED TO COVER ME ;-) YOU WILL ONLY PAY ACTUAL SHIPPING/INSURANCE! See below ;-)Just in time for the holidays this Zenith 5S119 is ready for that special present to yourself or that radio-collector in your life! I put a Buy-It-Now on this sale as some folks have asked me about this in the past - note shipping will be free on a Buy-It-Now sale and I will credit that back to the buyer (so your only cost is the Buy-It-Now price). As you probably know, this model is big enough to make a real presence in any room. The figured walnut grain really stands out under the high-gloss lacquer finish and will definitely be a conversation piece. From the stylish cabinet design to the multi-colored Zenith dial, the warm glow this radio projects when the lights are turned down is...well...just awesome! It features 4 bands (AM/broadcast plus 3 shortwave bands), a tone control and clock-like precision tuning. Lastly this set functions beautifully with great selection/sensitivity and a warm responsive fidelity! Now for the details! This set was an actual barn find! It was a victim to time and the elements...including families of mice. Most of the capacitors and much of the wiring-insulation had been chewed off underneath along with all the paper on the speaker. The chassis was rusty, wet, corroded, and the tuning mechanism was froze up. Next, lichen growing on top of the coil covers and many seeds and rodent waste prevalent and lodged into many little spaces! The cabinet was in a fair state but only a few tubes remained. See the couple or pics I included regarding how the set looked. The chassis was in bad shape but I did manage to clean it up. I then restored the cabinet and electronics - and then did an alignment. I did remove the tuner and dial and cleaned those pieces up and got them functioning great. Next I replaced all the caps and any other components as necessary, and either added new wiring or re-insulating the bare mice-chewn wires. A PM type Zenith speaker was added in place of the original; however I did retain the field coil from the original to keep the circuit as is. In truth...I have another of this same model by Zenith with the original speaker but it does not sound as rich/warm (it has me thinking I should swap out the speaker in that radio as well with a PM type!). The dial was cleaned up and works excellent with no issues, all bands work great, all controls work as well too. I did have to replace the disintegrated speaker grille cloth with modern day material, but I chose one that I thought suited the set well. Lastly I sanded this set down to bare wood and used Mohawk brand products/lacquers to finish the cabinet. Lastly a new poly belt was installed for years of hassle-free tuning issues! There is some missing loose insulation inside top of cabinet that I left alone...you can fix or leave alone too. Also, one of the hands rubs on one portion of the glass when tuning making a sound...this can be fixed by slightly bending it towards dial if you choose to do so...I had forgot to adjust that when I reassembled this the final time.I apologize that some of the images are a bit blurry...my phone takes better outdoor pics. Here are links to 2 YouTube videos I took with my smartphone...note how buzz/hum free this set is when volume is turned down. Also - this was in my basement with NO antenna connected...very good at pulling in stations:https://youtu.be/AGRuR6m4-RM https://youtu.be/6xj6m1htDwYAgain shipping will be over-estimated to cover myself. Winner will only pay actual shipping/insurance costs as I will refund any difference after radio has been shipped. Any questions - ask before offerding and Good Luck.
