Very Rare 19th Cent. Nez Perce Pipe Tomahawk w/ Removable Bowl:
$1995.00

Greetings fellow collectors: This is an authentic 19th century pipe tomahawk from the well known and respected Mark Francis collection of Native American weapons. It is pictured in the 2009 book \"The Mark Francis Collection of American Indian Art\" page89 figures 146 & 147. It is attributed to the Nez Perce or Crow of the upper Plateau region. It measures18 inches in length and features a 10 1/2 inch long hand forged iron head with a very rare screw on and off removable pipe bowl. These removable pipe bowls were often lost by the Indians and the pipe tomahawk no longersmoke able,so it was thenstrictly used as a weapon. Any examples that still retain the original screw on and off bowls are extremely, extremelyrare with but only a few known, even in any museum collections. This tomahawk has seen better days, it was recovered from a chest in an old leaky barn back in the 1920\'s by T.J. Godwin, who worked for the Union Pacific Railroad and retired to an old homestead in eastern Idaho. A neighboring rancher told Godwin that the previous property owner had a local Nez Perce family living and working on the property many years before. This all of the history I have on the piece. It was purchased by a fellow collector directly from the Godwin family in the 1970\'s. The axe head and haft show signs of corrosion and oxidation, along with wear from age & use. While not a pretty example, this pipe tomahawk is important for it\'s historic value. Removable pipe bowl examples are extremely rare. This style of head has been documented in the Peterson tomahawk book in two places, exhibiting almost identical form and art features, both attributed to the Crow or Nez Perce. One of these were used in fact for the cover sketch of the Peterson book, look closely at the bottom example. This is a great, authentic weapon from the true Indian Wars period that would make a great addition to your own collection! We have a fair market value reserve on this piece, so please plan on offerding accordingly.
