ITEM CA319. “BY / H. BAADER / PHILA – MUSTARD / MANUFR,”bluish aquamarine, cylindrical jar form, early smooth base, 4 7/8”H, inwardlyrolled mouth, dug and cleaned. American,C. 1860.
Though I have cataloguedthe bottle as smooth based, I actually believe there’s evidence of a faintpontil scar that has been diminished by the cleaning process. The bottle displays beautifully as shown butclose inspection reveals a slightly “waxy” feel. With that said, this remains a pretty andhighly unusual food bottle.
Over the coming months wewill be listing many bottles from the collection of the late CarolAmbruster. Carol carefully assembled hercollection over a span of thirty years, selecting the best example of a givenbottle she could find. Any bottlesdamaged or cleaned were purchased only because a mint example was notavailable. Although she focusedprimarily upon Philadelphiabottles, Carol also collected other fine early bottles blown both here andabroad.Documentation
