A proven workhorse throughout the world that has aged just enough not to be outdated but to be of good economical value. There are basically 2 flavors of this server, one for 2.5 and one for 3.5 Hard drives. As far a s being quiet, that depends on the size and speed of the Hard drives 2.5 vs. 3.5, I have noticed that the 7500 rpm 2.5 hard drive units are far more quiet than the 3.5 10,000 rpm units with all the bays filled.

The Dell R710 is a fantastic and cheap old server for a home lab or just to have and run for a very small office. It’s quiet and expandable with multiple configurations for drives and PCIe cards. I have two in my “home lab” and they are very quiet and cool. My larger one pulls about 200-250 watts mostly idle, with 3 SSDs and 3x 3.5” HDDs with dual Xeon procs and 72GB memory all DIMMS filled.

Probably due to having the faster CPU chips it is a bit louder than my previous r710 which was an 8 core. However the extra speed for VMs and the Docker containers make it worthwhile. Otherwise everything else worked right out of the box.
