Purchased a little opty for an old Socket 939 (GA-K8NF9RH) mainboard that I got for repair (recapping job). Did not want to spend much. These days Opterons 939 are sold for few money. Compared to Intel, the processing power equals to a Pentium D 930 (3GHzx2), that is about the same processing power than a Pentium-DualCore 2160, that is a little more power than the Pentium Dualcore SU4100. Little Opteron 170 reaches about 11.000MIPS (11 GIPS in SiSoft Sandra) and 11.000 MFLOPS (11GFLOPS in SiSoft Sandra, where the Pentium4D930 and the DualCore 2160 score only about 8 to 9 GFLOPS.) It uses old DDR1 memory @ 400MHz, but if you are using 4 modules, you will get only 333MHz (AMD design) About Overclocking: Stock Opteron 170 is 200MHz x 10 = 2GHz. It will easily reach 250MHz x 10 = 2.5GHz on stock cooler and good thermal grease. By doing so, you will get the 333MHz bus to 416MHz. Mine is stable at this speed, and it gets more than 15GIPS and 15GFLOPS. Being a hardware fan, I have quite a lot of old devices around and wanted to bitch with the Opty a bit: Installed 3 Gigs of RAM and 4 x 60Gb old Seagate Barracuda ATA100 diks and clocked the CPU at default 200x10=2GHz I used this platform to virtualize and managed to have six virtual machines running WindowsXP installations at the same time. (Each 2 machines on a disk, 30Gb for each) I used this platform to virtualize and managed to have two virtual machines running windows7 installations at the same time (each one in a disk, couldn't get 3 virtual machines because I had not enough RAM). Little Opty is old now, (5 years ago it was the top of the AMD DualCore pro-line), but it still has three times the power of an Atom, and equals todays cheaper Celerons dualcore. It will move general apps. It's a pity that DDR1 is so expensive. It still makes a very useable machine... but nothing to do against Intel i3, i4, i7: only the i3 has three times the power of this little Opteron. The recipe is lots of memory and a fast hard disk.Read full review
