  • Upgrade longshot for Linux doesn't pan out

This motherboard is one of very few misses I've ever seen from ASUS. Traditionally, they make some of the best motherboards around. This motherboard, however, does not fit that mold. This board was my attempt to salvage my last 939 dual core Athlon chip. Noticing that the SATA ports on this board are labeled Master/Slave was my first indication that interesting results lay ahead. Turns out the chipset on the BIOS supports a compatibility mode for SATA with IDE commands. It doesn't work right. Also, broken support for MSI style interrupts is a part of the chipset on this board. Which effectively breaks SATA support of any kind on 2.6.20+ kernels. Booting with pci=nomsi on Ubuntu 8 and 9 helps you get Linux installed, but good luck getting a "large" hard drive like a 300GB drive to ...

  • Asus A8V-XE 939

Excellent motherboard. Compatible with any 939 chip including dual core opterons. Has all the connections i was looking for including two IDE channels for my old HD's and DVD burner and 4 ram slots. Front panel connections are very clear, no need to reference the manual. Overclocks decently well for the price and it being a Via chipset. I have an x2 3800 (stock 2ghz, 1.35v) overclocked to 2.65ghz at stock voltage (this was the highest I could go even w/ increased voltage). Temps are very cool with my Cooler Master Eclipse at 1800rpm at 32idle/48load.
