This router is part of the Cisco Integrated Services Router series and quite popular among business owners in need of routers with the speeds and secure connectivity they require for their businesses. This series of routers is ideally suited to small offices and remote office deployments. As part of the Integrated Services series of routers, this Cisco router combines secure Wide Area Network (WAN) connectivity and integrated 802.11 b/g Wireless Local Area Networks (WLAN) in a single, fixed-configuration device. The Cisco 851W router features a Fast Ethernet WAN interface and 4-port 10/100 Mbps switch. Integrated service routers in this series provide Stateful Inspection Firewall and IP Security (IPSec) VPN support to ensure secure access when connecting to the Internet or remote offices to your central site and WLAN 802.11b/g with a single fixed antenna. This series of fixed configuration routers offer wired and wireless connectivity and support broadband cable and Asymmetric DSL, or ADSL modem Wi-Fi SDM. This Cisco 851 router is equipped with a built-in processor that is capable of running security services, while providing the wireless signal strength to meet your business networking needs. Your network is protected with security features that include a firewall to keep intruders out and Virtual Private Network (VPN) encryption. This model supports five VPN tunnels, advanced application inspection and control, email inspection engine, HTTP inspection engine, no service password recovery and system logging EA certification enhancements to provide secure Internet access for your business. Network security is further enhanced with this router’s hardware accelerated triple data encryption standard and advanced encryption standard. The software features of the Cisco 851 router include routing information protocol, layer 2 tunneling protocol, Network Address Translation (NAT), Point-to-Point Protocol over ATM, PPP over Ethernet, spanning tree protocol, Dynamic Host Control Protocol (DHCP), Dynamic DNS Support for Cisco IOS and Quality of Service (QoS) software features. The hardware features of this Cisco router include an Ethernet 10Base – T100Base interface, 64MB of Random Access Memory, 20MB default flash memory, WAN 100MB Ethernet, 4-port LAN switch with MDI/MDX for auto crossover, and RJ-45 console port connector type. Monitor the operation of your Cisco router with LED indictors for PPP, VPN, ADSL, WLAN and LAN performance. The Cisco 851-K9 router comes with everything you need to set up and deploy your network, including a resource disc, 2 RJ-45 cables, power adapter, console cable, power cord and a user manual. During setup and configuration of the router, you will select a password to protect your network, and that password must be used by devices connecting to the network. Although this Cisco router is a complex device, setup is simplified with the Cisco Router and Security Device Manager web-based configuration tool and Cisco IOS. The Cisco IOS and the web-based management tool provide IT managers with remote management and control over the router configuration to enable them to quickly troubleshoot any issues that may arise. When you upgrade to this router, you will have all the hardware, software, tools and features needed to ensure optimal connectivity and security for your business.

The greatest part (for me at least) is knowing that it's running on Cisco's (proprietary, yes but) amazingly rock hard hardware. I'm using this router currentlly to study SDM for my CCENT/CCNA but then plan on replacing my 2611 router with this 851. Cons: It doesn't have wireless. But that's alright as Wifi is handled elsewhere in my network. Best to use seperate device anyways as it makes access control easier and eliminates a Single Point of Failure! YEAH!Read full review

Great Router for Studying and Home Use.
I'm using this router for my home lab and it is great. Has a pretty recent IOS and SDM. It's great because I can use it as my home router when I am done studying. Highly recommended for anyone studying for CCNA or just wants to use it in a small home network.

Great SOHO router, can use Security Device Manager for users that are not IOS savvy. Has IOS for users trying to study for CCENT and CCNA. Has built in 4 port switch, one drawback is it only allows 1 VLAN. 5 stars *****
