I've had two of these, and bought two used for relatives. They are the best backup for Apple laptops, no question. If you're hardware handy, you can buy used ones with small disks and swap in a bigger standard drive - the Time Capsule will format the drive for your and start using it. Lots of places on the web can tell you how to upgrade them. If you just flop them on a shelf, they can overheat and have component failures; definitely get some airspace under them - little rubber feet at a minimum. I set mine on a little wooden frame with a cheap USB-powered fan blowing up onto it, and haven't had a failure since.
The 1st gen is not a fast device, but it is reliable device. Also, you can upgrade its HDD by increasing disk capacity.

I had an old 3 TB USB drive sitting around with nothing to do. Enter the 1st Gen Apple Time Capsule for $30 from Ebay... A few turns of a screw and I have a 3 TB network attached storage system for the house.

For my first external had and router scythe same time, the time capsule is better than I thought. Easy hook up and with the daily backups, this device is highly recommended to anyone who has had back up problems in the past. It does all the work for you daily.....

I use it as a wireless router. Internal HDD is very noisy so I upgrade to SSD 100Gb disk and it is just perfect now - quiet, low energy and colder. Great thing is strong wifi signal even without antene :-) And looks great. For this money, no doubt a cool bargaine. I have reccmanded to my friends and not to be students, thy would buy it immediatelly. Pardon my English.
