So I decided to use an old Dell Optiplex 755 as an online entertainment computer. I loaded Kodi in order to watch movies and listen to music. I had a Core 2 Duo 3 ghz processor and thought it would work but the movies would end up buffering a lot. I discovered that the Core 2 Duo processor was being over tasked when Kodi was running, pushing it over 90%. I found the Core 2 Quad Q9650 on Ebay and bought immediately. It arrived early and looked practically brand new. It only took 10 minutes and a dab of thermal paste to get my computer up and running again. Now when I run Kodi, the processor shows only a 40% tasking. Better yet, my Windows Experience Index went from a 6.8 to a 7.3. As old as this processor is, it is still relevant in todays computers.

Well I bought this to upgrade my old PC which I only use for music, movies and web browsing. This CPU is getting too hot even with Noctua NH-U9B. While on idle the temps are around 45 degrees which I think is too much. Go with AMD instead =)!

Much faster than the dual core E8600 (3.33GHz) CPU it replaced! Paired with a Dell OEM NVIDIA GTX 645 (these has to run single slot GPU), running Windows 7, WEI of 7.5, even with SATA-2 connection (Samsung 840 Pro SSD installed with 1TB WD RE4 for data drive). If you have a PC with LGA775 & can benefit from this chip, get it, it's the best on OEM machines. Due to higher wattage, one cannot run the QX9650 on OEM machines, will need a retail MB & be sure to check compatibility. Although I can't do so on my Optiplex 780, even with PSU upgrade, many has stated getting 3.5GHz & higher w/out any increase of voltage! As for my Optiplex 780, this was my best investment hardware wise, the rest were components I had stored away from previous upgrades, or removed from donor computers. While I don't know the max limit offhand, I'm running 16GB DDR3 1600MHz (4GB x4) in mine, although the frequency downclocks due to chipset limitations. More RAM is better than faster, I can not only run the installed OS (now Windows 10 Pro 64 bit), can also run virtual machines when desired. Bottom line, the mainstream Q9650 was the official end of the era before the 1st gen 'i' series arrived. While some of these performed better, the Q9650 still kicks many AMD builds of the era to the curb, using a lot less power while doing so. Plus in 2018, a less costly option, as high powered Phenom chips still hols their value well, as this one also did until the last year. The Q9650 still fetched $100 or more in early 2017, a few months later pricing began to drop & I purchased at $75. Now as low as $49.99, a fantastic value per dollar & still a relevant CPU, as it still runs the latest version of Windows 10 (1809 64 bit). Grab a Q9650 before all of the good ones are gone! I replaced the Intel Core 2 Duo 2.6GHz from an old desktop Dell Optiplex 755 that I picked up from a pile destined for the garbage bin. Now it's running great (along with a DDR2 ram upgrade and graphics card) and able to play recent games with decent performance as well as playing HD multimedia files and encoding. Highly recommended CPU for those older desktops.

While it took a while to get here (from China to the States) the processor works 100% correctly and as advertised. Upgraded a gaming machine from 10 years ago from something that could barely play Minecraft (Maxing CPU threads) to something that plays it smoothly (typically 80% in the CPU monitor). Would recommend to anyone that has a machine that otherwise feels "too old" to do anything with, but otherwise works perfectly.
