The D-Link DES-1005E is a nice little "general purpose" 5 port unmanaged network switch. It does not overheat, and has topside LED indicators that give you an indication of port activity.. The black plastic case has a curved shape to it, so don't plan on stacking things on it.... Otherwise it is a sturdy black box that performs as it should and easily expands your network topography without draining your wallet.... I recommend this one....

Picture on the dlink box makes you think this is a standard sized ethernet switch. we have all seen them over the years. So, when I opened the large box and found something the size of a credit card with a power supply from 10 years ago, I didnt know what to think. But it worked like a charm. Maybe heat wont be an issue since it is so small. Typical dlink routers in switch mode still throw out a tremendous amount of heat. This may be the solution if heat is a factor. You can't beat the price for sure. The box size was definitely a psychological marketing ploy for the shelves in the big box stores. If they had packed it in the tiny box it needed, customers would most likely be less inclined to buy it.

I have had very good success so far with this one and with three others that we have been using in our network. This one, which replaced a similar, older device (Sohoware 4205), gave us a fivefold improvement in download speed per the speed checker provided by our ISP. The only issue was with the AC to 5V converter which failed soon after installation. This one was used and only about $10 so we will just will look for another converter to replace it.

I plug this switch in and it has worked flawlessly. As another viewer wrote, you can only switch between four devices as one port is used to connect to your Ethernet source.
