I bought a Dell Precision 690 from work for $150.00. It was a great deal even though it only had one 1.86 GHz Xeon. This 690 has the first revision motherboard so I was pretty much limited to dual core and I decided I might as well get 2 of the fastest dual cores I could find. Getting 2 CPU's that are basically a C2D E6850 for $86 is an incredible deal no matter how you look at it. I now have a 3 GHz quad core with a 1333 MHz FSB for $300! (needed a 2nd HSF) I love these processors; they blaze through everything I throw at them without breaking 70%. Combined with a 9800GT and 2 Raptors running RAID 0 it almost makes using my computer fun again. Xeon has always been the leading edge of Intel's design, and even though these are 3 generations old they still rock. I also have a Quad Core i5 running at stock 2.8 GHz and in Windows 7 WEI score it gets a 7.3 and these Xeon's get a 7.2. so I definitely don't feel like I'm losing any power. If you have a Dell or HP workstation and need a heart transplant for them, definitely consider a pair of Xeon 5160 CPU's. With the low prices and the performance they deliver you can't lose.Read full review
The Xeon 5160 CPU’s were a matched set and I installed them into a Dell 1950 series II server. These processors are the fastest this box will take. The server booted up without issue and survived a 24 hour burn in. This box has been put back into production in our development / testing Citrix Xen Stack and is operating just fine. These processors are VT enabled and we regularly run up 120 players on different game servers on this box. I contribute the fact that I have had no issues with them, that they were properly handled before I got them.
I've been wanting to add one of these to my Precision 690 WS every since I purchased it, but the list price was way too high. I recently found this and a matching OEM heat exchanger and said go for it... It popped into the LGA771 socket in two minutes and fired up fine with no BIOS reflash needed. I can tell a difference in system performance already, but once I add 8GBmore RAM and upgrade the OS to Win7 it will rock for a 7 yr old workstation. Very happy thus far, hope it lasts...
I purchased this item because I needed something with power and reliability and that's exactly what I got. I like the price on the item, very good price for what you get. I also have a set of Xeons for the older socket type, and thus far it beets them, and my AMD Phenom 2. I would highly recommend this product for someone who is looking for reliability and power for a good price.
WOW!!! Was deciding if i needed to upgrade my 5150's to 5355's or 5365's (8 cores) but decided after seeing how dirt cheap (literally cheaper than dirt) these were i had to go with these CPU's. Installation wasn't the easiest procedure but i managed. Excellent CPU's, definately worth more than they are.
