I got the Pro-Ject Tube Box S to replace the solid state phono box I originally bought with my Pro-ject Debut lll turntable. I prefer the Sweet, accurate sound of vacuum. This phono preamp sounds incredible. The only "con" to this preamp, at least for me, is the fact that it has a solid state front end, which is then fed into the vacuum tube output stage. It does sound incredible, but to me I can still hear what I call, "The cold, brittle solid state sound". In my opinion, if you feed a solid state output into a vacuum tube, that vacuum tube is going to sound more solid state than warm, accurate vacuum tube. If Pro-Ject ever builds a true, pure vacuum tube pre-amp I will definitely buy one but I don't expect them too anytime soon. I listen more to the all vacuum tube phono Preamp and power amplifier I designed and built myself. I'm a true Tube purest, the tube box S sounds great, but my all tube system sounds better. I recommend the Tube Box S for anyone that's looking for entry level audiophile sound.Read full review

The phono preamp originally came in a steel an plastic case which was ok. The internal shielding was foil / paper, which performed sub-par. I transferred the circuitry to a new all aluminium case and tied the chassis to the signal ground via a parallel connected capacitor and resistor pair that solved the sub-par shielding. A much better performing preamp now. The analog performance is quite good now. The USB performance is fair but passable. Overall the unit gets a B-, which for the money is quite a good deal.

This pre-amp is a very good value. Operation is extremely simple and delivers a nice clean sound. Two thumbs up. My wife and I bought it for my son in law for his birthday. He was able to use my 40 year old Bang & Olufsen turntable. I forgot how much I loved the sound of a good quality LP.

Anyone who owns a turntable owes it to themselves to get a phono pre-amp to avoid the cheap excuse for a phono pre in any stereo or home theater receiver. Immediately after hook-up I noticed the significant and obvious improvement of the sound. The best way I can put it, without getting all "audiophilee" with my terminology, is that it smoothed out the rough edges of the sound provided through the receiver's phono pre-amp input. And it did it for only $50. A tremendous bargain when considering that the Box E is made by Project, a renowned manufacturer of phono equipment. You can't go wrong.
