Making your older computers last longer by upgrading
I have what once was the top of the line motherboard: the Asus A8N32SLI deluxe. Back in '05, it was the best, especially paired with 2 good video cards, and all the memory money could buy back then (2gb). It ran great until recently. I put one of those dashboard gadgets from google on my desktop and noticed that my CPU was maxed out all the time! I thought my GPU caused slowdowns, but my Opteron 146 single core server CPU was the bottleneck. So I found an Opteron 175, dual core. With it, I should have half the churning, at least in programs which can handle multiple cores, which is swiftly becoming "most programs" and as time continues to go by, even that dual core is going to seem small and start churning up again. I know my motherboard has a limited lifespan on it, being a socket 939 and ... I have what once was the top of the line motherboard: the Asus A8N32SLI deluxe. I know my motherboard has a limited lifespan on it, being a socket 939 and all, but next time you think you want to just JUNK your computer for being so slow, take a look inside and see what your options are. Hopefully, you've kept everything you got with your computer at the start, especially the book with your motherboard. If you don't have it, search the internet for your board's maker, and copy it from their site. The documents are usually in pdf format, opened by Adobe Reader, free online, or with Foxit Reader, a smaller and more nimble pdf reader. That book, once you locate it, contains a variety of secrets to making your motherboard (hence your computer itself) last longer. Look to see how much memory you have (use CPU-Z, downloadable for free, to get current specs) and how much you CAN have (XP can't see more than 3gb ram, while Win7 can use much more). Maxing memory greases the road to easy gaming. It's a definite value upgrade on any computer. Changing the CPU is another high payoff upgrade; it's changing the computer's brain. Moving from 1 CPU to another isn't difficult; what's difficult is deciding which cpu is BEST! First, find the socket type--it limits your choices. Second, check if your motherboard can handle multiple cores, and how many. Then you can make a huge change in your computer's abilities. Granted, the changes will be more obvious in programs that are written to use multiple cores, but the numbers of programs that fit this description grow hugely every day. Obviously, upgrading your hard drive will speed things up. Moving from a 5400rpm HD of any capacity to a 7200rpm HD is one way, and moving from any HD to a Solid State Device (SSD), a HD with no moving parts, is a MUCH better way, but empties the wallet fast. A big drive is better than a small one, usually, but a fast small HD with only your OS on it to boot and a bigger slower HD for storage is a smart setup. The final vital upgrade is video card(s). If you have only 1 card, and it has SLI (nvidia) or Crossfire (ATI/AMD) capability, then simply putting another card just like it in will almost double your gaming capability. If your card's model number starts with a 6, 7, or 8, you'll be shocked at how speedy the 2x and 4x cards are. And cheaper, relatively speaking, for what you get. Two 240 GT cards (by ANY mfg!) will slay a costly mighty 8800 GTX OC card. ONE 240 card will, too! And that's not even the top of the pack: the 400 series ($300-ish and up) is really fast. So, CPU, memory, HD and video are 4 quick ways to make that old box feel new again. Check out the new DVDs and USB devices, too. It's easy to do these things. How-to articles and photos and instructions abound online. Have no fear and enjoy your "new" computer!

Easy to max out old PC
A good buy to restore an old HP desktop PC, But beware its chipset temperature rises very high as soon as a CPU intensive task starts (not the CPU temp itself), case fan speeds up and makes a lot of noise. Old chipset heaksink will have to be checked and probably upgraded.

Okay chip for 50 bucks.
I inherited a system board and needed a chip to build a home grown san. This chip was a bargain of a find, and I use the system to do some monitoring work as well. I have not really pegged the chip, but so far the temperature is pretty stable and the box has been rock solid. I'm happy with this purchase.
