MOTIVATION: This drive is a good price for the space. I bought it so I would not have to worry about backup for a couple years. Its design is good, very small, and practically silent when operating. Overall I love the product but only gave 4 stars overall because its included backup software is not lenient enough on CPU use. INCLUDED SOFTWARE: I am disappointed by some of the software that comes with the drive. I ended up only leaving drive utilities and using windows backup to store emergency system images. After I set up the automatic back up software, that can select files by type, and constantly update the backup. I noticed what I felt was an excessive (12%) CPU usage from the backup software even when the drive was not connected. (CPU may have only been running at 50% maximum frequency) This bothered me enough to uninstall the included backup software. I never updated the included backup software, so it may have improved if I had, and might be useful to some. I kept the driver utilities to run diagnostics and it does not hog CPU. Additionally I simply copied some files for immediate use if they are lost on my internal drives. CAPACITY: This product is not technically 2TB but rather exactly two trillion bytes. Two terabytes actually should equal 2^40 bytes which is about 2 trillion 200 billion bytes. Rather than using the standard base 2 interpretation of a terabyte, this drive uses the base 10 interpretation which windows recognises as about 1.82 TB. This is no big deal if you want only want two trillion bytes. DRIVER & INSTALLATION Do not let windows install this device. It should open only as mass storage. Once you can access the files on the drive you can install everything it comes with and read instructions. I incorrectly allowed windows to search for additional device drivers and other secondary device installation procedures. This is warned against in the instructions. This led to Windows not installing the drive right, and constantly asking me to format it and intermittently disconnecting the drive. Do not format the drive. Once I undid the attempted installation I continued having difficulty reaching USB 3.0 speeds. My USB 3.0 driver had to be rolled back to an earlier functional version on my ASUS G73 laptop before I could get it to work. It was not difficult to find the driver. Apparently I had installed an updated driver that was not approved by ASUS. USD 2.0 was always fine. I would recommend reading the instructions (included on drive)because I did not, and I experienced difficulties that required moderate computer knowledge to overcome. THOUGHTS Much of this review relates to my own personal experience with this device. Overall I am very happy with the device. My review is meant to help people if they experience problems similar to what I faced based on my own mistakes and expectations. Included software did work for me, but I am simply not patient enough to use it in its entiretyRead full review
I have been using this for a couple of days now, no complications. Very easy to install and takes little effort, just plug and play. Very small size and easy to travel. Must bring USB cable with you everywhere because it is not a standard USB cable. Very small and lightweight for a hard drive. The tiny footprint fits perfectly on my small desk and the thing is almost totally silent. The display light lets you know when it's doing something, just sitting idle, or gone into standby mode. Two terabyte gives me all the backup space I need, and I'm backing up lots of movies, videos, photos, and music, as well as a plethora of documents.
Always been a user of WD drives. Fast, reliable and the best quality. Before, I was using the WD My Passport Elite (640GB) and the WD My Book Home Edition (750GB). Eventually I found out that it's way more practical to buy a bigger drive and have it partitioned so I can use 1TB for files and leave the other 1TB for my Time Machine backup. I love the password protecting feature. Definitely a no-brainer.
I've had this product for about a month now, and I've been happily surprised. I never considered WD a good drive, I never gave one a chance though. Some other older WD drives required the use of proprietary software, this drive does NOT. The Size of the drive is striking, and I mean that in both Physical size and the amount of data it can hold. This drive is TRULY portable I love the fact it doesn't need a power cord and the one I have came with a free neoprene drive holder which holds the drive and the little cord (It uses a USB 3.0 cord, however, if you don't have a computer with a USB 3.0 port it's ok as it will work with USB 2.0, it is backwards compatible, So all you need is a USB input.) It's like having a 2 Terabyte thumb drive (2TB= 2000GB). It is a true Hard Disk Drive but it's so smooth you can barely tell it's spinning when holding it, and while plugged in it does have a light indicating it's writing/reading. The Bottom line is that for the price you cannot get a better drive or even one nearly as good, some in the computer community may think this drive isn't as good as there drives which they paid much more for, but, IMO if they gave this drive a chance they would be extremely surprised. I give this 5/5 stars.Read full review
Quality product to my surprise. Wanted something to back up music files and provide portability when I travel to "stark" hotel rooms and generally access to "my" music while away from home. Doesn't heat up or feel warm at all. Very easy to use, light, rugged (to TSA people handling). Built in softwear even provides back up to my system. Overall, I will probably buy another when this one nears capacity.
