I purchased the Dell 964 becaue I need an all-in-one unit that doesn't take up to much space. The price on eBay was right for the printer so I decided to replace my older Lexmark AIO inkjet printer. (Dell uses Lexmark for their printers, allegedly.) The printer hooked up fine, and the software loaded quickly. Unlike HPs, the software for Lexmark is much much less memory intensive. The printer would not recognize the color carttidge at setup and had to be replaced by Dell. Dell cartridges are tweaked just enough that they are suposedly proprietary...you have to order from them. Once replaced, the printer's scanner malfunctioned -- the scanner head was jammed. Trying to tap it loose caused the glass scanning surface to break. (And I mean tap...very lightly.) Overall, the manufacturing quality seems awful. The printer still works, and prints well...but not great. The printer is nosy when loading a page, but the print process is quiet. It's very likely I got a Monday morning unit, and that these are adequate machines for the home office or student...but I can't recommend it based on my experience.Read full review

My older 964 finally died. Looked at several newer printers. Several different brands. Went back to the tried and true. Less bells and whistles. Simple and reliable!

This AIO printer is very easy to install has a good print and very easy to operate. In my opinion it is not as complicated as my other AIO printer, HP 6480. The only thing I don't like with inkjet printers are the sound they create when preparing to print, unlike the laser jet, and the limited margins. This Dell model has shorter sounds than my HP 6480.
I purchased this all-in-one about a month ago as a replacement for a 5+ year old Lexmark ink jet and a bulky scanner. I'd used one before and fell in love with its one-touch print, copy, and fax functions. I am especially pleased with its easy-to-use controls, color LCD, relatively quick printing, and EasyShare compatibility. The included software takes a while to install, but seems convenient in that it will allow you to order ink directly from Dell when your supply is low. My only complaint is that this all-in-one isn't compatible with Windows 98SE, so I can only print from my laptop.
