You can't beat this drive unless you move into the all solid state mode. It has excellent response due to it's speed, a very large buffer, and the SATA III interface. The prices on "mechanical"drives are falling again now that Japan is getting back up to speed after the terrible tsunami damage and the glitz of everyone wanting a solid state drive. Western Digital is known for a reliable product that lasts a long time. I actually can't comment on their customer service because I have never had to use it. That says something about thieir quality!! The falling new prices and every once in a while you get a real steal in an Ebay auction make this the way to go.
I purchased this hard drive used on Ebay, and found it to be very impressive. It replaced my aging 120gb Seagate and a 200gb Maxtor. Now, don't get me wrong; both were great hard drives, but I needed more space and less power consumption. Here is my take on the Western Digital Caviar Black 1tb hard drive's performance: Pros: 1. plenty of storage (1 terabyte) 2. quiet 3. fast (spindle speed 7200rpm & average seek time 4 milliseconds) 4. latest technology (dual processors installed) 5. fast rewrite (32mb of onboard cache) 16mb more than VelociRaptor! 6. 5 year warranty 7. easy to install, format, and get up and running. Cons: None so far. The install was very easy. I purchased Acronis True Image to clone the older drives, but later discovered that I could have downloaded Acronis online for free. Anyway, the transfers took about one hour, and the WD Caviar Black is running great. It is a very fast drive system. The WD-WD1001FALS cost $200 when first introduced about 2yrs ago. So, if you can find one for under $100, you have got yourself a great deal! So, buy it! I liked mine so much, that I bought a second one, and I am tickled to death! Two terabytes should last me well into my next computer build, and some. I highly recommend this hard drive.Read full review
Myself, I have not experience any HD problems... so far; but my friend have. A particular line of well known 7200 rpm hard drive brand act up within a week after he bought it, so I decided to stay away from that brand for now (even known they are going for very good price every where!). Internet search shown that the drive line that my friend bought in fact just have a major firmware revision & the defects are linked with this line!(hence the price discount!?). I like this line a lot (and prefer to buy that brand) but the price on the ones with good firmware revision are not reasonable nor is it readily available... so A search of the internet also tell me that WD black Caviar 7200rpm has some very good features and some specs are even better than that other well known drive line, in particular is its server heritage, reliability and power consumption and the price is also very reasonable on Ebay; so I picked up one up. So far, every thing is as good as can be. I am an average user so I have not monitor every aspect of the drive to be able to rate it more accurately but it seems to perform flawlessly and have not noticably increase the temperature of my case. This is perfectly good with me. The only thing that I don't like about this unit is that comes bare... no setup disk, no mounting hardwares. etc... but I knew that going in. So overall, I would give this WD Caviar Black two thumbs up.Read full review
Okay, first off, for people who don't know much about HDDs, you need to know this before you choose a size: the number it gives on the HDD is not your actual max memory. All HDDs will automatically section off a bit of space, to prevent it from breaking. Also, a Terabyte in tech talk is 1024GB, whereas in manufacturing, they bring it down to 1000GB to make it simpler for you. The actual max memory of a terabyte drive is around 930GB. Okay, math lesson over. This drive runs cool, quiet, and fast. It is a great value, and provides plenty of space for an average user. If you do video editing, you might want more space, but this drive is perfect all around.
Just got around to installing. Got here quickly and well packed. Had to repartition it, but no big deal. Thought it would be wiped and reformatted. It is quiet and fast. Brought new life to an older computer. Thanks.
