I was given a used Dell Inspirion 660s by a friend of mine since he was no longer using it. It just so happened to have an i3 3240 processor. While I was a bit sceptical of the machine at first, having only owned i5s and a single Sandy Bridge i7, I did not look a gift horse in the mouth and graciously accepted the PC. After running a few tests on the machine I was pleasantly surprised to find that this i3 performed almost as well as the Ivy Bridge i5 in my aging but still very useful laptop. As a result I simply added some RAM to the system and used it as my main desktop for the past 6 months or so. It is only just now, after moving the guts of the computer to a much larger case and after adding a gtx 970 video card that I have decided to upgrade the CPU to a 3570. This should allow me to move my 3d modeling software from the laptop to the desktop and speed up my productivity. Otherwise I would have been happy keeping the old i3.
