Coming from an older LaCie Big Disk Extreme, I really like the smaller single drive design of the d2. The BDE used two drives in RAID 0 which lead me to a false sense of security - a mistake I'll never make again! I've bought a pair of 1TB d2 Quadras and love them. I'm running them via eSATA and the speed is addictive! The second d2 I bought came with the LaCie rack and now I've got both the d2s and the old (repaired) BDE on my desk purring along nicely. I'll add a third d2 with 2TB later this year to fill out the rack and give me all the external storage I'll need for quite a while. LaCie is well known for the reliability of their drives, and the components used inside bolster that reputation. My old drive lasted almost six years with daily use (on all the time) before one of the drives bit the dust. Their ease of repair along with the very friendly support staff keep me a loyal fan. My only two issues are more concerns than actual problems. One is that one of the two d2s is a little noisy. It actually even has a slight vibration (audible, not tangible). The other is a lack of fan cooling. Seems like it might be easy enough to add, and the vent design seems adequate, but cooling is like money - you can never have TOO much! Still, these things run like well tuned machines and are keeping me well backed up - which is exactly what they're supposed to do. Highly recommended.Read full review
This product has an aluminum case that seems to provide excellent heat dispassion, however, I cannot speak for the long term, as these units are just too new. I am using them interchangeably with both Mac and PC's. Their setup is a breeze, just plug and play with an auto setup including a variety of formatting configurations that are available during the setup process. I have purchased a few of these units and I am using them for Hi Def. video editing purposes. The speed of the drive is excellent. The USB, Firewire and eSATA connections make the drives compatible with most computer systems used in my field, if not in the computer industry as a whole. These drives are very quite and it is possible to forget they are running except for the big blue button on the front; with the included software this button is programmable and can start (among other things) an auto backup with just a touch. As yet, I have not used this feature, but it adds another dimensional use for the purchase of a few more units. These units are also stackable and easily used in several array configurations. So far a solid system, the only downside I see, the enclosure needs some air space around it for heat dissipation or an air conditioned cabinet to keep the drive cool.Read full review
This drive is one of the fastest drives I have ever used. Also this drive was sold at one of the best prices ever so I cannot complain one bit. The design of this drive is also very aspiring. I recommend this item to anybody who needs to transfer tons of gigabytes at fast speeds. But I only recommend this item if it is exactly the same as far as it's interfaces go 9USB 2.0 is slow, but FIREWIRE 400, 800, and eSATA are tremendously fast so if you are looking for this drive make sure it says "QUADRA"within it's name.
LaCie drive are great. I have used them for years with great dependability and performance. They have a well designed enclosure. All the cables you would need for any type of connection are included. The fire wire is fast.
Awesome hard drive! I've had no problems with it going to sleep and not being able to wake it etc.. I use it for pro audio recording and its been great!
