Wanted a backup RStudio & Python notebook. This T420s offers excellent value in a thin and light package. Perfect! Upgraded DRAM to 16GB, inserted a 1TB SSD for main drive (preloaded, of course, with CentOS 7.2; NB: no HDD = red flag), and swapped out DVD for modular bay 2TB SSD (both are Eluktro Pro Performance SSD's, BTW). Plenty of room for the rest of my analytics-stack, MySQL, and all of the client-side Hadoop-stack apps I use. Haven't been RAM-bound in R, ... yet! Most of its time is spent on (script) coding, but the screen offers plenty of real estate for most activities. On this, I typically run R-scripts against smallish datasets of 5 to 10 million records and fewer than 50 fields. At this sort of scale, the T420s seems perfect; it would undoubtedly do well as a Win/Excel platform, too. Actually prefer this T420s to my (custom ordered direct from Lenovo boat anchor) W530 with all its bells and whistles, except for the 32GB of RAM. BTW: I bought three X220's, here, and do prefer their IPS screens; same drill: big SSD &16GB of RAM. However, overall, I really like the T420s best for most of what I do. In passing, I had had some trouble finding an actual 42T4845 battery for this T420s, but it turns out that a vendor here on eBay appears to have an actual 3600mAh replacement. We'll see what actually arrives. I know, it has a short run-time ... but, so do I. If you want/need, you can hang a monster battery out the back and another in the modular bay; good luck on ya'. My days of all night coding are long past.Read full review
