The IDE/Sata adapter that plugs into the usb jack appears to be well built and works fine(although I have only tried it on Sata thus far). The power adapter is another story. The white molex plug on the dc power cable that is included, is kind of junk; and the reason is two-fold. The male molex pins are of cheap quality, and the female molex counterparts(in the molded black plug attached to the power unit are mis-sized or something). I literally had to take a very small jewelers screwdriver and spread them apart to be able to get the male molex pins to insert correctly. Had I used it on an IDE drive, it might have broke the connectors on the IDE device I was trying to power. IN fact: when I tried to hook up the white molex connector to the black one, all the males pins on the white molex backed straight out of the connector. It wasn't until i slightly resized the female pins on the black molex that I was able to get a connection that left all pins in their respective place(in the white molex). Be aware of that as a possible problem! Other than that glitch, everything else worked as it was supposed to. System recognized the drives I connected, and no problems reading/writing to the various drives I threw at it. All in all, a fairly good product; but prepare yourself for that "stubborn" molex power connector. FYI years ago I worked as head tech for a 2 way radio communications company and worked with molex connectors each day for about 12 years so I know molex connectors and in fact had access to some older(original molex pins) and put them side by side against the ones in this connector and you could visibly see the difference in cheapness without even trying. Yea! Go China! Right!Read full review

This cable by itself is a good product, but for the way most people will want to use it, it lacks the attachments to get the job done. This is a straight IDE connection cable, it does have a SATA connection but you will need a SATA cable fitting to use it. You will also need the proper power supply attachments to use it. For most people looking to back up or change a hard drive, they will need a full "kit", which will have all the power connections, SATA connections, etc. Again, this product is simply the cable. So, nothing against this cable, but without the other connections, it will be useless.

This works fine and is cheaper than an enclosure, and you might not have old IDE (parallel ATA) ports in your newer motherboard. Construction quality is decent, perhaps questionable, but the see-thru casing makes it easy to detect a problem with the USB cable solder points. This kit doesn't include the required power supply, beware. It includes a cable to power up a SATA disk from a molex power connector, so you can't use it to power an IDE disk. You may use power from your own system's PSU, so this might not matter much, and the kit with the PSU is double the price, so you might prefer the convenience and go for the expensive one.

Works great with old SATA or PATA hard drives as a short term solution to get the data off. Don't expect to use the drive long term. There is no power switch on the power supply so the drive will run constantly and since there is no enclosure with a fan the drive can get extremely hot in a short time. But great for testing old HDDs or just pulling data off without having to crack open your tower and actually installing. Remember to change the jumper to MASTER. cable select or slave do not work.

Most drives from IDE to SATA will work and have no problems. However some drives demand a higher power consumption, while others do not recognize at all. However I have been using this device for my external drives when I can. From CD-rom units to outdated over sized IDE units. Even newer SATA and SSD. However there is that needle in the haystack where you will find a drive model that will not function at all. I have a lot of hard drives and I/O devices to test with so I know. Great addition to anybodies work-space. Portable and great.
