Raspbian OS, USB SSD w/ Basic Enclosure, Boot SD Card - Raspberry Pi 2 3 kit:
$37.70

(Quick note: I do not accept offers. I don\'t have any idea how to disable the \"Make Offer\" option. Apparently, wants to decide for me.)If you are serious about your Raspberry Pi project, here is something that should help you keep yourself from possible headaches related to running your Raspberry Pi from an SD card. You can add some reliability and speed to your Raspberry Pi operation by running your OS from a small SSD drive. It will provide a more stable and reliable platform for your file or web server, media center, game console, etc. This kit will allow you to boot from a custom boot SD card and run your Pi from the provided SSD drive. Please READ CAREFULLY before offerding on this item - at least the next few lines!.Make sure that you have:
  • 100% working Raspberry Pi 2 or 3. This kit should work with any Raspberry Pi; however, it has NOT been tested with anything other than the two mentioned models.
  • Solid power supply that provides true 2 Amp current minimum. *
  • Good quality micro-USB cable to power your Pi.*
* Please see the \"IMPORTANT\" section below.
If you are using Raspberry Pi 3 and have switched on the experimental boot feature, this kit has NOT been tested with this firmware switch turned on. (FYI: you cannot go back, as this is a one-way operation and cannot be reverted back to the default mode.)The provided photos are for reference purposes only. However, they are a sample of the actual components used. Please also note: this setup has been tested with Raspberry Pi 2 & 3 only - not with any earlier versions or Pi Zero!
What are the benefits of this setup:- It is \"Plug-and-Play\" right out of the box - no additional setup/configuration is required.
- SSD drives win against magnetic HDD\'s in speed, durability and power consumption.
- SSD drives win against flashdrives and SD cards in reliability and speed (flashdrives and SD cards are not meant for frequent writes).
- No need for spin-down daemon/service as SSD drives have a built-in low power mode on no activity - perfect for a server environment.
- This setup doesn\'t rely on the automatic device assignment (which can be re-assigned during boot if you plug in other devices). It means that you can plug in other USB drives without interfering with the default device assignment of the OS/root drive.
What are possible downsides? That depends on what you have in mind for your Pi.
If you foresee reinstalling your OS, this setup doesn\'t provide for simply re-flashing your OS on an SD card. If you decide on using this kit, you should make a backup or an image of both, the disk and and SD card, and then do regular backups of your system. Hopefully, that\'s something you would do regardless of the used media and setup if you value the time you invest in your setup.
Another possible drawback may be the power consumption. If you are planning on running your Raspberry Pi from a small battery/solar setup, this kit will use a little more power when the drive is in operation.
What You ARE Getting
- 16GB SSD mSATA PCI-e drive (typically, SanDisk or Kingston).
- mSATA to USB converter.
- Latest Raspbian OS preinstalled on the SSD drive, configured to live on the USB drive rather than on the SD card.
- Custom boot SD card.
- Short USB connector - so you can start using this kit right away without obscuring other USB ports on your Pi.
- Basic enclosure housing the SSD/mSATA converter comboThe Operating System
This kit has the latest Raspbian Jessie preinstalled (most popular, Debian-based OS used with the Raspberry Pi\'s). Two packages (Wolfram and Libre Office) have been removed to free up some disk space and two packages installed (Firefox and GParted) have been added.
What You Are NOT Getting
- Raspberry Pi
- Any accessories that are not specifically listed here as included with this kit.
What this kit/setup is NOT
It is not another \"Raspberry Pi Startup Kit\", a.k.a. a bunch of accessories thrown together. It has taken some time, research, sourcing of the right components and then setup and testing to make it all happen, and make it as easy to use as possible.
Things You will want or need
- Good power supply.
- Good USB cables.
- Possibly a powered USB hub.
Things you should do
- You should change the \'pi\' user\'s password ASAP - especially if you are going to access the internet with your Pi.
- You may want to change the name of the defaut user too. There are good tutorials online on this procedure.
- Make an image of both, the OS disk (the SSD drive) and the boot media (the SD card).
IMPORTANTBy plugging in any additional devices in the Pi\'s USB ports, you increase the demand for power by your system. The SSD will consume less power than a magnetic HDD, but still more than a mouse or keyboard. Don\'t be surprised if your Pi won\'t boot, will display intermittent power issues (rainbow square or little lightning symbol) or freeze after booting - especially, if you are using Rasperry Pi 3. Even without plugging anything in the USB ports of the Raspberry Pi 3, the computer consumes more power than any earlier version, due to its architecture and two extra built-in devices (wi-fi and bluetooth chip). You may run into the above issues regardless of whether you are plugging in this drive or some other device. Two things that need to be considered:
1. You need to make sure you are using a solid power supply that can deliver sufficient current to your system - 2 Amps minimum. Some USB power bricks sport a label that boasts 2A or 3A, but in the real world, their voltage may significantly decrease at the rated current or they may actually shutdown. Cannot stress this enough: especially the Raspberry Pi 3 is unforgiving when it comes to low or unsteady power.
2. Need for thicker (lower resistance), quality USB cables - mainly, the micro USB cable between the power supply and your Raspberry Pi.If you have a small USB HDD or SSD, plug it in your Raspberry Pi and see how it reacts to it. It will be a good indication for you to see if you may experience some power issues when plugging in this setup. You may want to resolve those problems first, before buying this set.
Final Notes:Other than the mentioned removed/added packages and the boot customization, this is the same exact Raspbian OS that you can download from the raspberrypi org website. For that reason, you should look for help with any issues on the many online forums - just as you would if you were running the OS from the SD card. Hopefully, all the above notes helped you understand what\'s involved and whether this kit is for you or not.I have seen all of the above power-related issues and problems in my setups, so I speak from my own experience.
RETURNSNo returns are accepted. However, if something goes wrong, please contact me first with any specifics and I will work with you to try to resolve it.Please keep in mind:
- These setups are tested and must be 100% working before they are shipped.
- You may be asked for photos or video depicting the problem or detailed description (as there may be a solution for it).
- If there is a good reason and a return is arranged, the shipping costs are the buyer\'s responsibility.
- Absolutely no returns if the buyer has not observed the basic rules for powering the system as outlined above.
responseIf you are happy with this kit, please express it with your response. Your response will meet mine.
If there is a problem, please let me know and I\'m sure we can find a way to solve it.
