WONDERFUL KASHMIRI ENAMELLED BRASS BEAKER, RICHLY COLOURED ENAMEL, INDIA, 19TH CENTURY
This wonderful Kashmiri beaker has good proportions. It stands on an engraved pedestal footwith a punched scrolling foliate pattern, and flares gently towards the rim. The brass has been chased with traditionalMughalstyle patterns and borders. This item dates the circa 1880.
Once the chasing has been completed, the resultingdepressions wouldhave been filled with powdered enamels, one colour at a time and in a strict order as the firing temperature foreach colourwas different. This technique was known asMinakari. This beaker has been enamelled in white, red, turquoise, deep blue and dark green, which would have required five firings.Once all the firings had been completed the enamel would have been polished.
This object is colourful and has warm tones. It would display well in a traditional interior. The coloured enamels are reminiscent in style and colour ofthe hand-woven carpets of Kashmir and the Middle East.
Condition–Thisis very good andcommensurate with age and careful usage. There are some slight signs of wear and use, which do not detract.
