If your rack has the depth and you have a space where this beast can make some noise, the bang for your buck in your home lab, SoHo, or small business this Advantech unit offers is unbeatable. A complete 8 core Xeon D 1548 big Iron machine has some setbacks compared to a desktop pc that you should understand before offerding.
It's not loud for a server... but it's loud for a PC. Servers don't care what they sound like... they want to be cool all the time. The Advantech FWA 3260 is cool all the time.
This is a headless server. Its output is not designed to be viewed on a monitor. You can install a narrow basic video card in the single 8X slot and you would then get video output. The normal usage mode is via a serial connection, either via another computer running a terminal emulator(PuTTy) or a serial display. A remote shell would be your normal interface once your environment is installed. This mostly a non issue if you intend to run a bare metal hypervisor, since usually there isn't a need to see what the host outputs... though installing one might be a challenge.
Whatever OS you're installing needs a serial installer. While many firewall and purpose built server software have an option for this, you'll need to do a bit of research for enabling a serial interface before installing most linux systems or use a preconfigured installer for ESXI (serial connections can be made after installing ESXI).
If you understand those cons... this machine screams! The 8 core Xeon D 1548 SoC simplifies hardware to allow server grade performance and interconnects in a relatively lower power solution (45 Watt TDP). This processor has some nice touches... like Secure Key, AES-NI, VT-x, VT-d, EPT and an onboard intel 10G network controller (via 2 X 10G SFP+) and a total of 6 Intel Gigabit RJ45 ports (2 for management). 2 M.2 Slots allow for fast storage and 4 Sata Ports. This is a FWA-3260A unit, which includes a BMC daughter card. This gives access to sensor readings and power control even when the server is off. Note that the IPMI interface doesn't appear to offer console redirection.
